Private Kindergarten in Reisterstown, MD

Our private kindergarten in Reisterstown, MD is academically serious and developmentally honest at the same time. Children in this classroom are reading in leveled groups, working with numbers to fifty, and writing letters correctly, and they are also building with blocks, singing, and learning how to be a friend. Sacred Heart School of Glyndon treats kindergarten as the year those two things stop competing and start reinforcing each other.

Instruction follows the Archdiocese of Baltimore course of study and is delivered through a mix of whole class teaching, ability grouped reading instruction, and learning centers. Because our teachers group children by where they actually are rather than by what the calendar says, a child who arrives already reading and a child who arrives still learning letter sounds both spend the year moving forward.

What Your Child Will Learn In Kindergarten

Kindergarten is the first year with formal instruction in every core subject. Here is what each one looks like in practice.

Language Arts

Reading instruction runs on the Macmillan and McGraw-Hill series, covering phonics, high frequency words, vocabulary, and literature. What matters more than the series is the structure around it: children are placed in small reading groups by ability and read books matched to that level, so instruction lands where each child actually is.

  • Daily phonics instruction connecting letters to sounds and sounds to words.
  • A growing bank of high frequency sight words recognized on sight.
  • Small group reading with texts matched to each child’s current level.
  • Listening comprehension through daily read alouds and retelling.
  • Early writing: labels, lists, sentences, and simple stories.
Mathematics

Kindergarten math moves from counting to true number sense. Children sort, compare, graph, and measure with real materials before they work the same ideas on paper.

  • Sorting and classifying objects by attribute.
  • Recognizing, naming, and drawing two dimensional and three dimensional shapes.
  • Numbers zero through fifty: reading, writing, counting, and ordering.
  • Position and comparison words including above, below, more, fewer, and equal.
  • Comparing sets, graphing results, and reading a simple graph.
  • Measurement with nonstandard and standard units.
  • Introduction to place value, addition, and subtraction.
Religion

Kindergarten religion focuses on relationship: with God, with family, and with the wider world. Students attend Mass with the school regularly, and once a year our kindergarten class plans and reads at a Mass of their own. For a five year old, standing at the ambo in front of the whole school is a formative morning.

  • Understanding God as creator and as a loving presence in daily life.
  • Learning and praying the prayers of the Church.
  • Participating in school liturgies and preparing one Mass each year.
  • Connecting faith to how we treat classmates, family, and people in need.
Social Studies

The world expands outward from the child: first family, then classroom, then neighborhood, then community.

  • Family roles, traditions, and how families differ.
  • School life, rules, and being part of a group.
  • Holidays and their meaning across the year.
  • Transportation and how people and goods move.
  • Community helpers and the work they do.

My kids have received a quality education at Sacred Heart while being a part of a service-oriented and caring community. I am so impressed with the teachers and their commitment to their students. I would send them to Sacred Heart all over again.
